Research Associate

Dr. Stefan Mommer is a Newton International Fellow at the Melville Laboratory for Polymer Synthesis of the University of Cambridge (UK).

He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Chemistry from the RWTH Aachen University (Germany) in 2010 and 2012, respectively. As a part of the ERASMUS scholarship, he joined the group of Prof. Peter O'Brien at he University of York (UK) in 2011, where he worked on the total synthesis of samaderine C, a potent anti-cancer drug. For his Master thesis, he shifted his focus on polymer science. Under supervision of Dr. Helmut Keul and Prof. Martin Moeller, his Master's project centered on the synthesis and investigation of a novel bifunctional coupler and its selective reactivity towards diamines to form poly(amide urethane)s. In 2013, he startet his PhD at the DWI - Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials in Aachen (Germany). As a GARG fellow, he 2016 joined the group of Prof. Mitsuru Akashi at Osaka University in Osaka (Japan) for an interdoc project. In 2017, he was awarded a PhD in polymer chemistry (summa cum laude) for his works on thiolactone-based coupling agents for the synthesis of poly(amide urethane)s.

Dr. Stefan Mommer joined the Scherman group in January 2018, where he currently works on the development of click-like peptide ligation chemistries for the use in biohybrid structures and their CB host-guest interaction.

He is currently funded by a Newton International Fellowship through the Royal Society, the independent scientific academy of the UK, dedicated to promoting excellence in science.
